[kopete] various (text encoding, animations etc)

I'm new with kopete (previously a SIM user) and have installed 0.12 alpha1 aka 0.11.91. I have some questions;

* Since I started to aggregate contacts using both MSN and ICQ (to so called meta contacts), the swedish encoding of the ICQ messages (but not the MSN ones) stopped working (can't read åäö anymore).

* If a metacontact is online on both ICQ and MSN, how do I select the preferred method to contact him? For example, I want to use MSN when double clicking on John Doe, but it defaults on ICQ.

* I can _see_ animations sent to me via MSN protocol, but how do I _send_ animations?

* I can watch friends who have webcams. But does it work the other way? And if it does, how do I know that my webcam is supported by kopete/linux before I buy? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

A lot of questions. Well, here we go.

Do you mean this? Bugs 115791, 95358 and 121053 might be related as well.

You can rightclick on a protocol icon and select Start conversation to start a conversation on that particular protocol.

There's another way, but I don't if this works. You should give it a try. It would work if the contact is in your KDE Addressbook. Open his/her properties and select the button IM Addresses on the first tab. There's the possibility to select the default protocol.

I think if the current emoticon set has animated emoticons inside. On www.kde-look.org you can find a set containing them.

Yes, that is possible (even with 0.11). But you should look for a webcam HOWTO for all the gory details.

Did you set up a specific encoding for this contact before aggregating them? If you did, please check to make sure that the encoding you set is still saved after aggregating them. There has been a bug submitted to bugzilla for ICQ encoding settings not being saved on quit, so it could be the same thing

There's not a way to that yet, other than the suggestions that bram85 provided

no, i don't believe you can send animations yet, but I'm not up to date with the MSN protocol.

Most webcams are supported by various drivers out there. I know most of the Logitech Quickcams are supported, because I have one. You'll need the spca5xx driver for that particular camera.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks a lot for taking your time to answer my questions! As Kopete development seems to be going quite fast forward, I hope that the features I wish for (but are not in the roadmap for 0.12) maybee will show up in 0.13!

there won't be a release of Kopete for KDE 3.x after 0.12 is released (we may even only do a 0.12.0, I haven't decided yet) since we'll be pushing for Kopete to be 1.0 by the time KDE 4 is ready.
