kamix taskbar slider doesn't work

I installed kamix so I could make the headphone volume active on the panel since like most systems with AC97 my Master controls do nothing. kamix compiles and runs fine, and I put the Headphone in the "short list" but the slider doesn't do anything! I still have to open kamix and adjust the headphone slider there. I looked at the other option of using the ac97_quirk option but the module is compiled into the kernel so I can't pass the argument to it as far as I can tell. Any suggestions?
