no sound, this is killing me, help a noob

Ok, so I have KDE installed, I've installed Alsa, i've set the use flags (correctly?, i don't know)....i was able to get the fuzz sound from a terminal, but no longer....

I have checked and my levels are all unmuted in the mixer....

When i go to Control Center, it gives me the "Unable to start sound server....." error....

I've searched everywhere and it seems that what works for others, won't work for me.....

Please tell me step by step what i need to do because i'm about to break this machine in half

my sound is onboard ...it's a realtek AC 97 on an Abit NF4 mobo....

I'm running gentoo K 2.6 for AMD64....

Please someone help

Looks as if you're using a Gentoo system. I have had similiar problems, so I decided to download the alsa source packages directly from the alsa homepage. Compiling them manually helped me to fix the problem.

As I updated to the 2.6.15 kernel, I decided to unmerge the alsa-driver and to use the one integrated in the kernel... this works fine for me.

are you sure you installed arts ? I've dicked around with kde's sound quite a bit and unless you rework the whole system KDE will always give you that "unable to start sound server" if you didn't install arts from the kde downloads.

If you are using Fedora, try system-config-soundcard.

What type of output jack (digital, analog) are you using? Also, take a look into alsa's ".asoundrc" file. It solved my problem, and could be that same with you.
