KMail don't start
I'm using SuSE Linux 10.0 and KDE 3.5. Out of the blue KMail stopped to work. I can sign on as root and it will start, but not as a regular user. I also tried to delete the "lock file" in .kde/share/apps/kmail directory, without any luck. There is not any warning or message popping up, it just stops loading after a short time.
Anybody having a clue, and can give me a hint in the right direction?

You can try to start KMail from a konsole to see if additional error message are printer. To do so, open konsole and type

When trying to start as user, nothing. When starting as root I get:

I think I found the problem!
I updated from SuSE my other computer this evening, and now I have the same problem on that computer.
As far as I remember the packages that was installed:
Package: i41-base (ISDN for Linux Basic Utilities) and
Package: submount (Auto Mounting of Removable Media)

The symptoms are the same as when trying to run more than one copy of some of the Linux applications. So it look like more than one instances of the Kmail is running, if I'm right where can I find and kill it?

There are programs that's can only be executed ones. KMail is such a program. If you start KMail twice, it will hightlight the older instance of KMail (even if it is in Kontact). Because it does hightlight if you start it twice, I think it is not the most likely cause.
You can test if KMail already runs with the following commands:

Thanks for the responds and you are right,only after trying to start the KMail after a reboot do I get an respond after the command: pidof kontact. Like two numbers for each time I try to open the KMail.
I have made my self a new user and is then able to open the KMail. Also transfered my old e-mail from the old user account, however having problem with the address book. I was almost sure it was in the KABC folder, but the address book is empty when I open it up in the new KMail. So where is the address book located and how to transfer it?

My addressbook is stored at ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc. Copying the files in that folder might just work. If it doesn't work, you can try KAddressBook->File->Import->vCard and select std.vcf in the folder ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc.
In general, if issues can be fixed by creating a new user account, there is most likely something wrong with the configuration.

Thanks again. I followed your instruction for copying the kabc. However, it was showing up as blanc (no info) in the KMail. The empty file std.vcf had to be deleted and the file std.vcf_1 renamed, now it was showing up with all my addresses in KMail.
After copying the folders for notes and other things, I was ready for the korganizer. And this is where the problem was, as soon as I had that folder over I got the same problem with the new user account!
When I open the folder up as root it was freezing up and I got this warning: Warning. KWin. Window with title "korganizer - Konqueror" is not responding. This window belong to application konqueror (PID=6939, hostname=localhost).
So I then copied the original "new" folder back to my new user and also replaced the folder in my original user account, and now everything is working!
One last question, will the "new" korganizer folder from my i686 machine also work on my x86_64 machine?

In most cases, the configuration files are stored as text files, so it should be work with all processors. Events are stored as .ics which are text files.
std.vcf_1 is a backup for std.vcf, so appearantly std.vcf was damaged.

Thank you for all the help and easy to understand explanations. Now I have all my computers up and running under my regular sign-in accounts.
On the x86_64 machine I did what I should have done from the beginning, if I know what was wrong from the beginning. However, this is how we learn!
I just did a search for the file: std.ics and deleted it right in the search window. Then I opened up the korganizer folder and changed the name on the backup file (std.ics~). After a restart of the computer the KMail was back in business!
Thanks again for all the help. Hopefully somebody els will have use for what I have learned. Great forum!!
