Programs Stopped Working

Hi. I'm new to Linux, KDE and Open Office. And I'm very confused about a lot of stuff, so I hope this is the right place to ask questions. I'm using PCLinuxOS, which has all those programs included. Everything was working fine for awhile, been using Open Office Writer, working fine for awhile now. But something weird must have happened because a few days ago my Firefox icon started not working a lot. Had to click and click, trying various places it's shown at to get it to open up. Finally it eventually opens. Well, Writer was acting the same way, but now it won't open at all, neither will any file created with it. Any idea what I might do about this?

I have a lot to learn about all these programs. Can you recommend a good place to learn the system management types of stuff that Windows more or less does for you? I feel like I have very little control of my system and there's a lot of stuff that needs to be set up correctly that doesn't work right. Any good (and easy) places to learn this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Hi splatch, welcome to the forum ;)

When an application behaves Like that, open a console and launch it from there. For example with the command:

Source code

1
firefox

This will launch your Firefox, in the console you'll probably have a few (or a lot) error messages. Post them on the forum and people will help you find the solution.

To learn more about the administration of Linux systems, here you'll find some links for the preparation to sites with exercises and tutorials (dedicated to the Linux Professinal Institute certification:

Also, the online version of Linux certification in a nutshell:

Though, don't fear asking questions in the forums, people will always help you start off with Linux 8)
