KsCD skipping on digital playback

Hello all,

I'm a relatively new Linux user running Ubuntu 5.10 on my laptop, with both GNOME and KDE desktops installed. Under KDE, I've been having a hell of a time trying to get KsCD to achieve digital playback without skipping.

DMA is enabled, the sound system has realtime priority, and I've tried large buffers; nothing works; skipping is still present. It is not constant, but occurs when the system is "distracted" by something else, for example if I am scrolling fast through a large document or if I load a program.

I even tried disabling the KDE sound system, wondering if I could use an alternative, but this simply resulted in an error from KsCD, which apparently no longer had the authority to mount /dev/hdc.

The GNOME CD player does not suffer these problems, but does not work under KDE...

Can anyone advise what might solve the problem? I'm not overly unhappy using GNOME, but since I use a lot of KDE apps it makes sense that KDE should also be my desktop. However, I refuse to work with it if playing CDs is denied me ... ;-)

Many thanks,

-- Joe
