USB stick desktop icon permanently present

Hi. I'm having a little bit of trouble with the desktop icon for my USB stick. In a previous installation of KDE (under Lunar Linux) such an icon appeared on the desktop whenever my USB stick was inserted, and disappeared when it was removed. However, I am now running Debian Unstable for a while again, and the behaviour is different. I found that initially no icon appeared when I plugged in the USB stick. I then made an entry in /etc/fstab for the USB stick, and now an icon for the USB stick is present on my desktop. However, the icon is permanently present. It does not disappear when the device is removed. It is even there when I first log into KDE, before inserting the device even once.

I would like to find out why it's doing this instead of behaving as it did in my previous KDE installation. Can anybody explain it, or offer any advice?

Thanks.
