Kinternet Configuration

I access the internet via a USR 5686 dialup modem, which has stupid mode set by default, and SuSe 9.2 which is set in Smart mode by default. I can connect by any combinations of these settings, except when both are set to smart mode. In this mode, I can switch the modem mode to smart, after a connection is made, but if set before, Kinternet is unable to dial out. I seem to get better performance in smart mode, so I would like to configure Kinternet to use it properly. I think that the problem is that Kinternet is not set to use the ATDT command properly, or that it simply has lost the phone number. Does anyone know specifically what file(s) control this?
