Being slow at startup

Ok! So I am running ubuntu linux and I decided to try out KDE. It has installed fine and is running great! :D

However, every time i start up kde, it goes really slow for about 5-10 minutes. I checked out top and it shows 0 percent idle and ALL the cpu being used just sitting there once everything has loaded up. It does this for about 5-10 minutes. During this time, it is so slow the mouse jumps around and if would take an application a long, long time to open... After that time, a window of Kate the text editor comes up and everything goes fast and back to normal... I do remember that right when kde starts up, a window comes up asking for the root password for kate and then it does this. If i hit the ignore button it still does this for that amount of time and then goes back to normal.. It exibits this behavior everytime I start kde. And if I were to open up kate right now it would open up fine.

This is REALLY annoying. Does anybody know what could be happening here?

Thank you!! =)
