problems with signing in to MSN

I cant sign in to MSN using Kopete. It says that I've got the wrong password, but I know it's the right one.
What might I be doing wrong?

Well you MIGHT be typing your password into your word processor (grin). But I bet that isn't the problem.

Have you tried connecting with any other Messenger Apps? Have you ever succesfully connected to the MSN Messenger? Can you send EMAIL allright using your MSN account?

I just now setup Kopete to use my MSN Messenger account (I had been accessing MSN via my Jabber account using PSI until now) and it went without a hitch. In fact, I am not going to use PSI any more... Kopete is slicker. Thanks!

There is only one way to make Kopete refuse the "NEXT" button when you create a new ICQ account entry (I think). That happens only when you enter an incorrect ICQ account name.

So, you must enter a valid ICQ account number BEFORE you press the "NEXT" button or it will simply ignore you. Your ICQ account number will be at LEAST four characters long - more likely it is 8 or 9 characters. It will contain NO letters - only numbers. My ICQ account is 13813347.

This could explain why you cannot complete your ICQ setup in Kopete.

To remove anything unforseen, I want you to setup your ICQ account first. If this works, then we will worry about MSN next.
So, let's try this step by step. You tell me which step fails for you:
  • Settings->Configure Kopete...
  • Click on "Accounts" in the left side
  • Now you see the list of your existing accounts
  • Click on the "New..." button
  • Now you see the "Add Account Wizard"
  • Click the "Next" button
  • Choose "ICQ" from the list
  • Click the "Next" button
  • Type your ICQ number in the "ICQ UIN:" field
  • Put an "X" in the "Remember password" box
  • Click the "Next" button
  • Now it says "Contratulations."
  • Click the "Finish" button

IF this fails... please tell me your ICQ account number.

OK ICQ is not important, this is the MSN topic.

The same problem

Yes, from six moinths ago, each time I try to use Kopete for connecting with MSN, the connection was refused with a message about wrong password, not only for my account, but all my present friends.

Then I try again with Gaim and the connection is OK

I have this problem with Mandrake 10.0; 10.1 and Suse 9.2

I am in a little network and the problem has the same profile in ALL the machines with that version distros.

OK what is Gaim???
Do I have to download it from somewhere?

Gaim is an instant messenger multiprotocol client, as Kopete.

The graphic look and feel from Kopete is better and Kopete shows the MSN absent friends too, while Gaim only shows the conected friends.

But (I dont know the reason) I am having continous problems for connecting to MSN with Kopete, at least in the version distros mentioned above.

In the Suse 9.2 distribution Gaim and another related packages is on the CDs

GAIM DOES show your offline contacts.
Buddis-->Show Offline Buddies
not that complicated. ;)
but still there is no solution yet as to the MSN problem, and if you have a different problem please post somewhere else.
Hail at my feet.
Also, btw, I have a site on my own server running FC3 using KDE.....

Kopete-MSN Messenger - invalid password

Hi - I've seen some people having problems. The last entry was from October 2005 but no 'fix' in sight.
I too have this problem - I wonder if this is related to the recent changes MS have made to Messenger - my version is 7.5
Crazy about connecting systems

Same Problem

I've noticed this problem before, I thought it was due to a corrupt install of Kopete. But it isn't.

I can use Gaim, and other clients with out a problem. With Kopete, "Password Was Wrong!".

I'm inclined to think the MSN Protocol has changed since the last release of Kopete. I'd use my packet sniffer to figure out the difference of the login handshaking through other clients including the MSN Messenger client and that of Kopetes attempt. But frankly, I'm far too lazy. I had to fight my self just to reply to this post!

So I suggest don't use Kopete for MSN. I wish I didn't use MSN because of course its governed by Microsoft's MSN division and Microsoft tends not only to discontinue support for early software, such as the good ole Windows Messenger (previously known as MSN Messenger, before the major changes to their client which prevented all of the script kiddie msn hi-jackers and malicious websites downloading peoples buddy lists, deleting buddy lists, sending its own payload through the users hi-jacked msn as a file transfer via an invisible window, and all the msn virii that were spread in the wild like a californian wild fire due to their very un-clever Active-X oriented MSN Client which any program could completely control and hi-jack until their major change will completely restricted plugins. Programmers had to register for a certificate before their software could communicate with the MSN Libraries)

I'm rambling on here now.. So if any one figures out the problem before I do please let me know.

Is there any one using Kopete that can actually use the MSN Protocol? Or is it just me and these two guys?

Sorry for being a jackass in advance,

RE: Same Problem

Microsoft doesn't mind to change the protocol so that third party clients have to fix their implementation in order to connect again. Maybe you're using an old version of Kopete which does not support the latest protocol changes?

That MSN doesn't work for you doesn't mean it doesn't work for anyone.

MSN problems

Please make sure that you're using the latest version of Kopete when connecting to MSN. Anything that is 0.11.x or later should be good.
