no FTP password dialog

Using Konqueror 3.2.1 I try to access an FTP site which requires authentication. I use an URL of the form
ftp://user@99.99.99.99/path
The server responds and Konqueror displays a nice page:

FTP Authentication Required
Description: User name okay, need password

Well, and that's it. It does NOT ask for a password, it just displays the question - and done. I am *very* sure that this user exists and the FTP server is working (I can use commandline ftp successfully e.g.)
I was already quite desparing and tried ugly old
ftp://user:password@99.99.99.99/path
but it seems that Konqueror strips the password out of the URL - which woud be reasonable...

Any hints?
